Work!
Work... well it was my first supposedly real day at work today, and we had not enough staff once again. I started off being in charge of 11 patients for drugs and stuff, 1 patient went home one went to another ward, then we moved two out of one room into another room so we could make that room into a male room, so then I had to deal with getting 4 new patients. 3 of the patients I had were in iso rooms because they had contagious stuff in their wounds, which means that you have to glove and gown whenever you go into their rooms. So one of the women i am looking after gets up and goes to the bathroom she seems to be doing okay but has some pain so asks for an injection of pain reliever. She has a bowel obstruction, so I get her meds and take it back into her room and she is looking not so good, I fix her nasogastric tube because it is sitting up over the iv pole and not draining so she is feeling vomity. I put it down on the floor as she starts vomiting and it drains pretty quickly. We emptied 320mls at 4pm and then another 650 within 20mins of me putting it down on the floor 2hrs later. This woman is not well. I give her her pain med and come back 5 mins later and she looks really bad, do some obs and they are outta whack, so we get her reviewed and they decide to take her to theatre as soon as possible. This totally stuffs up the night cause all my timing is out for all the rest of the stuff, I only hope i have done everything. The four new patients barely got looked after at all, I feel bad for them. one of the guys was a real mummy's boy, and his family were severely pissing me off by the end of the night with their endless requests, another guy got really really cranky at us cause he was given food but it was written in his notes that he was nil by mouth while he was awaiting a review of his swallow by the speech pathologists... so he got really cranky when we told him he couldn't eat anything else after he had already eaten. *sighs* Anyways, we got most of the stuff done and we got the heck outta there. Thank goodness is all I can say! I am going to bed now, gnite!
