Hey, I know mostly all I do here is gripe, but here goes...
Last night I had 8 patients to myself, 4 out of the 8 had CVC's all four of them were on hourly obs for at least one of their attatchments, if not all, almost every one of them had hourly additives to their IV lines. Two of them needed their TPN lines changed which is a totally sterile aseptic technique that takes about 30 minutes. Out of the others, 2 were day 1 post ops, one had a Patient Controlled Analgesia which is another person on hourly obs, the other was closely post op, so was on hourly obs as well. So that is 6 out of the 8.. the two others... one was an insulin dependant diabetic with bilateral amputations ( as in both legs amputated) and the other had rectal surgery and needed his drain taken out and to have his butt repacked. So.. Yay... not. So little to say I didn't get everything done, the night staff bitched about it, I got about 4hrs sleep and then I had to go back to work this morning.
Things didn't get better this morning, I had 7 patients, drains fell out and doctors got really mad, and patients freaked out as you would, I had to do double line changes on one of the ladies with the CVC's, I had IV drugs for one person on the hour every hour of the shift, I took out iv's, showerd people. It was just a loooong two days.
