Well, I could get an official warning for the mistake I made 2 nights ago. I was feeling pretty tired at 6am and put some drugs into one of my patients IV lines to infuse, but instead of turning up the line I had put the drugs into, I turned up her heparin line. Heparin is an anticoagulant, so it pretty much stops the body from clotting, or breaks down clots. I turned that line up to 5 times the normal rate. It was a total accident. I was tired, didn't look properly, the line I was putting the drug in was right by the pump that I changed, so my brain thought that it was the right one. If only I had looked more closely. So I got a call at 8:30am yesterday to ask why this persons heparin was at 5 times the normal rate. I immediately felt sick.
It turns out that she was okay by last night when i got back to work. *sigh* that doesn't excuse my negligence in doing it in the first place. So the boss is going to put in a report about it cause he is obligated, he doesn't know if it will go further than just a reprimand, or whether I will need an official warning. I am tellin ya now, there is no way it will ever happen again, I checked everyones lines at least 3 times every time I put any drugs in them overnight. Doesn't stop me from feeling like shit about it happening and like a total retard for doing it though. Have been kicking myself for the last 2 days for it now.
So now I have one day off before I have to go back.. I am seriously contemplating having a day off sick sometime very soon.
I need a new job and I need it soon.
